GBRA - SAFETY ADVISORY

March 20, 2023

GUADALUPE VALLEY LAKES CLOSED TO ALL ACTIVITY

WHAT:

The process of lowering the spillgates at Lake McQueeney and Meadow Lake will begin on Monday, March 27. In the interest of safety, all activity on and downstream of the Guadalupe Valley Lakes and in the exposed lake bed shall be suspended until the process is complete, as unpredictable increases in river flow may occur. Community members should stay out of the water and continue to maintain a safe distance from the dam at all times.

WHERE:

Downstream of the Lake Dunlap dam up to and including Lake Wood

WHEN:

Beginning March 27, 2023 until at least April 2, 2023

MORE:

GBRA will be attempting to make maximum release of around 5,000-cfs from the dams as the lakes are lowered, but due to the unreliable condition of the existing spillgates, releases of approximately 25,000-cfs for several hours are possible. For reference, a 25,000-cfs release could cause river conditions downstream of McQueeney and Meadow Lakes to reach levels similar to those observed during the high water event on October 14, 2021.

GBRA is in contact with the Emergency Management Coordinators (EMCs) for Guadalupe and Gonzales counties. Should a sudden loss of a spillgate occur, EMCs will be activated to alert anyone in the immediate area and provide emergency direction. Any emergency updates will also be posted to GVLakes.com.
